Bandwidth is the range of frequencies that a circuit operates at in between its upper and lower cut-off frequency points. These cut-off or corner frequency points indicate the frequencies at which the power associated with the output falls to half its maximum value. In physics and electrical engineering, a cutoff frequency, corner frequency, or break frequency is a boundary in a system's frequency response at which energy flowing through the system begins to be reduced (attenuated or reflected) rather than passing through.
In a filter, the cutoff frequency is the point where the response is 3 dB down in amplitude from the level of the passband. Beyond the cutoff frequency, the filter will attenuate all other frequencies, depending on the design of the filter. On a sweepable shelving EQ or filter, what you are “sweeping” (or changing) is the cutoff frequency. To our ears, this changes the point at which the filter is operating.
